Obituary

Arthur Lee Gardner aka “Tom-Cat”, born on August 14, 1941, to Richard Moore and Lucy Hamilton in Columbus, MS, passed away on March 15, 2026, at his residence in Columbus, MS, surrounded by his loving family. Arthur's life was characterized by a deep devotion to his family and a commitment to living with integrity and passion.

Arthur was a dedicated husband, a cherished father, a beloved grandfather, a respected uncle, and a loyal friend. His character was defined by strength and genuine affection, particularly for his loved ones. In addition to his family, Arthur possessed a spirited enthusiasm for automobiles and a gentle compassion for animals, interests that contributed to his distinctive personality.

Early in his career, Arthur relocated to Chicago, IL, where he was employed with ITT Bell & Grossett. He later served with distinction as a Chicago Transit Driver for 15 years and for Chicago the Department of Street and Sanitation and During this period, he demonstrated not only professional competence but also an inherent kindness and dedication to the community he served. Following his return to Columbus, MS, Arthur found spiritual fulfillment as a faithful member of New Baptist Temple, where he attended until his health began to decline.

Arthur was truly an individual of singular character, whose authenticity resonated with all he encountered. As is often observed, with Arthur, one either admired him or did not, a testament to his unwavering and genuine spirit.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Moore and Lucy Hamilton, his three brothers, Willie J. Gardner, Lorenzo Hamilton, and Ezell Moore, and two sisters, Susie Toney and Genevia Gardner.

Arthur's memory will be eternally cherished by his devoted wife, Alma Rose Gardner of Columbus, MS, and his beloved children: DeWayne Gardner, Calvin (Debra) Gardner, and Cedryck Spain, all of Columbus, MS; Arthur (Rochelle) Gardner, Jr. of Amory, MS and Aretha Cathy of Chicago, IL.; his bonus children, Yvette Spain of Chicago, IL, Chrishawn Davis Mars of Dumas, AK, Omarr Davis of Dumas, AK and Dolton Spain of Chicago, IL; He is also survived by his loving sister, Adortha (Edward) Williams of Columbus, MS; one aunt, Pauline Lee of Columbus MS; and a multitude of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will deeply mourn his absence.

Arthur Lee Gardner’s legacy of love, integrity, and authentic spirit will continue to endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. May he rest in eternal peace.
