Barbara Jean Malone, a woman of grace, intellect, and profound generosity, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at her residence in Columbus, MS. Born on March 22, 1946, in Columbus, MS, to Pearlie Strong and Ira Joe Petty, Barbara dedicated her life to education, community service, and enriching the lives of others.

Barbara's career in education began at R.E. Hunt High School, where she graduated with distinction. Her passion for learning led her to the University of Michigan, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. With her degree in hand, Barbara embarked on a remarkable career, initially making her home in Flint, MI. There, she served the Genesee Public School District with dedication for over two decades, shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning in countless students.

Her commitment to education and community brought her back to Columbus, MS, where she continued her invaluable work with the Crawford/Artesia Headstart program. Barbara also ventured into real estate, becoming a respected realtor for REMAX & Caldwell Banker, demonstrating her versatility and business acumen. In 1998, Barbara returned to Flint, MI, resuming her esteemed career with the Genesee Intermediate School System, where she continued to contribute her expertise until her well-deserved retirement.

Beyond her professional achievements, Barbara was deeply involved in her community and cherished her affiliations. She was a proud member of the national sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., and a devoted sister of the Gamma Delta Chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Her altruistic spirit shone brightly through her extensive volunteer work, including serving at the soup kitchen and various organizations throughout Michigan. She had a special passion for mentoring young ladies such as The Kudos and Xinos, providing them with invaluable books and wisdom that illuminated their paths. Ms. Malone made a major impact in their lives with her mentoring and leadership training.

Barbara found spiritual solace and purpose as a dedicated member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, where she actively served in field service, sharing her faith with conviction and compassion. In her leisure time, Barbara delighted in the joys of shopping and exploring new places through her travels, embracing life's adventures with enthusiasm.

Barbara Jean Malone will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to education, her tireless efforts in community service, her vibrant spirit, and the enduring wisdom she imparted to so many. Though she has departed, her legacy of kindness, dedication, and intellectual curiosity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Babara is preceded in death by her parents, one brother, John Ira Corder and one granddaughter, Shaheedah Adrian Coley.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memories to her children, Arthur Coley, Yvonne (Eddie) Covington and Patricia Miller all of Columbus, MS, Edward Coley of Nashville, TN and Shawn Coley of Flint, MI; her siblings, Joel (Felise) Abrams of Auburn, GA, Ruthie Armistad, Annette (Roscoe) Bradley, Samella Degraffenreid and Minnie Petty all of Columbus, MS; 15 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren, a host niece's, nephew's and other family and friends.
