Cleveland Neal,
Sr.
January 20, 1949 – March 15, 2025
Cleveland Neal, Sr., a cherished husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away on March 14, 2025, at the Tuscaloosa VA Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was born on January 20, 1949, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Herbert Neal, Sr. and Alice Darby, and he carried the spirit of his beloved city in his heart throughout his life.
Raised in the vibrant 9th Ward, Cleveland was deeply influenced by the rich culture and music that surrounded him. He had a profound love for music and dancing, often found swaying to the sounds of jazz and rhythm that filled the streets of New Orleans. A devoted fan of the New Orleans Saints, he celebrated every game with enthusiasm, embodying the passion of a true New Orleanian. Cleveland attended school at George Washington Carver Senior High School, Burton Music School, in Kenner, LA and later Rex Electronics School in New Orleans, LA.
Cleveland's commitment to service was evident when he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served with honor and dedication. After his military service, he returned to New Orleans, where he worked as a street construction worker for the City of New Orleans, contributing to the community he loved so dearly.
Cleveland married the love of his life, Claudia Neal. Together, they built a beautiful family, and Cleveland was a loving family man who prioritized the happiness and well-being of his loved ones. His bond with his elder brother, Herbert, was particularly special, as they shared countless memories and supported each other through life's journey.
Cleveland spent most of his adult life in the 12th Ward, where he was known for his kindness and generosity. In 2015, he relocated to Columbus, Mississippi, where he continued to embrace life with the same simplicity and joy that defined him. He made new friends and continued to share his love for music and community, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Cleveland is survived by his devoted wife, Claudia Neal of Caledonia, MS; his children, Cleveland Neal, Jr. and Carla (Vincent) Neal-Bush both of Caledonia, MS; his siblings, Herbert (Debra) Neal, Jr. of Lawrence, GA, Archie Darby, James (Tanya) Darby, Arthur (Karen) Darby, Jr., Cheryl (Ray) Lewis, Sandra (Eulister) Wilson and Patricia (Ronald) St. Amant all of New Orleans, LA; four grandchildren, Jerome McNeil, Jacari Bush, Kaylan Neal, and Kaydan Neal; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will forever cherish his memory. His spirit will live on in the hearts of those he touched, reminding us all to celebrate life, love, and the simple joys that make each day special.
