Columbus, MS
It is with profound sorrow and immense gratitude for a life beautifully lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy Mae Walls, age 88, on August 19, 2026, in Columbus, Mississippi. A beacon of strength, unwavering love, and profound devotion, Dorothy's departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who knew her, yet her spirit will forever illuminate the generations she so lovingly shaped.
Born on September 1, 1937, in Brooksville, Mississippi, to William Harris and Adeline Bell Reed, Dorothy's life was a testament to faith, family, and steadfast hard work. She was the beloved matriarch, the heart of her family, whose home was a sanctuary of comfort and belonging. Dorothy was widely known for her boundless kindness, indomitable strength, generosity, and remarkable hospitality, often expressed through a warm meal, thoughtful advice, a heartfelt prayer, or simply her comforting presence. She had a unique gift for making everyone feel cherished and deeply cared for.
Dorothy dedicated many years of service to her community, beginning her career in the 1980s in the Laundry Department at Mississippi University for Women. She later transitioned to the Columbus Municipal School District, where she faithfully served until her retirement after more than two decades.
Her spiritual journey was a cornerstone of her existence, beginning at a young age at Pleasant Grove M.B. Church. Throughout her life, her faith led her to find community and worship at 10th Avenue Church of Christ, Congregation Worship Center, and Northside M.B. Church. Most recently, she was a faithful and devoted member of Next Generation under the guidance of Pastor Leon Williams.
Above all, Dorothy treasured her family. She delighted in watching her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family flourish, instilling in them values that will continue to resonate for generations. Her influence lives on in the cherished traditions she established, the invaluable lessons she taught, the heartwarming stories she shared, and the abundant love she so freely gave.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Adeline Reed; her father, William Harris; her cherished daughter, Dorothy Ann Jennings; her brothers, Walter Walls Jr., Emmett “Joe” Stewart, and Willie Harris; and her sisters, Leo Dell O’ Neal, Susie Lee Reed, Willie Mae Reed, Ollie Mae Murphy, Addie Bee Reed, and Emma Bush.
She is survived by her devoted children: Bishop Noco Mack (Demorra) Walls of Oxford, Alabama; Diane (Robert) Bridges, Arthur Walls, Tony (Earlie Mae) Walls, Mattie Walls, and Renee Walls, all of Columbus, Mississippi; and Twana (Eddie) Webber of Jonesboro, Georgia. She also leaves behind her siblings, Larry Stewart, Willie Bee Luster, Ozzie Mae Thompson, Mary Ann Reed, Boone Harris, Roosevelt Harris, Vonzell Harris, Robert Harris, Mary Dell Robertson, Bertha Peoples, and Shirley McGee. Her legacy continues through her 23 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren; along with a host of other loving family members and dear friends.
Her family will forever hold dear memories of her legendary cooking, her quiet moments spent with puzzles, and the joyous fellowship shared at family gatherings. These precious moments, along with countless others, will remain a cherished part of her enduring legacy.
Though her physical absence will be profoundly felt, Dorothy’s family finds solace and comfort in knowing that the boundless love she poured into them will continue to flow from one generation to the next. She leaves behind more than just memories; she leaves a family strengthened by her profound example and forever connected by her unwavering love.
Dorothy Mae Walls’ life was a blessing, her love an immeasurable gift, and her legacy will eternally live on through the generations who were fortunate enough to call her their own.
