Earl Griffin, Sr., a beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 20, 2026. He was born on September 25, 1932, in Greenville, Mississippi, to the late Hannah and Wade Griffin, Sr. He departed this life at Baptist Memorial Hospital, having made peace with God.

Earl spent a significant portion of his life in Chicago, Illinois, where he lived for over fifty years before later relocating to Columbus, Mississippi. He was known for his vibrant spirit and zest for life and was never one to shy away from a good debate. Earl had a deep love for fishing and found great joy in riding his bicycle—a passion he faithfully pursued well into his 80s. Above all, he cherished his family, and his love for his wife and children remained at the heart of everything he did. He was also a devoted sports enthusiast and enjoyed following all types of games. Earl dedicated many years of hard work as a laborer at Brislin in Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hannah and Wade Griffin, Sr.; his sons, Earl Griffin, Jr. and James Griffin; and his siblings, Louise Crowder, Mack Griffin, Wade Griffin, Jr., and Lemon Griffin.

Earl leaves to honor and cherish his memory his devoted wife of 67 years, Betty Griffin of Columbus, Mississippi; and his beloved children: Norma (Peter) Jones of Columbus, Mississippi; Ivy (Leonard) Carter of Vicksburg, Mississippi; Earlene Russell of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Johnathan Griffin of Peoria, Illinois; Madzimoyo Owusu of Columbus, Mississippi; and Wade Corey Griffin of Marksville, Louisiana; daughter-in-law, Eva Griffin. His great legacy lives on through his 32 grandchildren, along with a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Earl Griffin, Sr.’s life was a testament to perseverance and love. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
