Emma Jean
Hughes
December 17, 1942 – January 12, 2025
On December 6, 1942, Sister Emma Jean Hughes entered this world as the sixth of ten children to Johnny and Clara Ellis Sykes. As a child, she was raised in the Columbus area known as "Cross the River" and attended R.E. Hunt High School, graduating with the Class of 1963. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at a young age and became a member of St. Matthews M.B. Church.
Emma met Eddie James Hughes, Jr., and they exchanged wedding vows on March 15, 1964. Their union celebrated the birth of four children. Upon marriage, she became a member of New Baptist Temple M.B. Church where she enjoyed attending church and serving faithfully until her health failed. Emma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Known as "Ma Jean", she enjoyed watching soap operas and spending time with her grandkids.
Emma departed this life on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-GT. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her children, Vince and Crispin Hughes; her siblings, Jimmy and Louise Sykes; and her son in-law, Michael Scott.
Emma's memories will forever be remembered by her children: Emile (Sandra) Hughes and Livia Kay Scott both of Columbus, MS; her grandchildren, Michael Hughes, Xiomara Watkins, Vince Hughes, Jeremy Haney, Jarrell Hughes, Essence Hughes, and Breland Hughes; her great-grandchildren, Cameron Hughes, Kalli Hughes, Ari Lacey, Vince Hughes, Jr., Zariah Hughes, Julius Patton, Jr., and Xyla Patton; her brothers, Elder Johnny Will Sykes, Willie Sykes, and Minister Roger Sykes all of Kankakee, IL and Charlie Sykes of New Orleans, LA; her sisters, Annie Bailey and Mary Ann Young both of Columbus, MS, and Mattie Lee of Kankakee, IL; and her daughter-in-law, Glory Hughes.
