Obituary

Brought into the world by the honor of God to Gipson and Annie Bell Petty, a lovely child named J.B. Petty. He was the youngest of seven children. Siblings Ira Harris, Willie Harris, Roy Petty, Mattie Shurn, Dorothy Hendricks, and Rose Sims preceded him in death. J.B. grew up in Caledonia, Mississippi and was married to his sweetheart, Clara Ussery Petty. He was also a caring and loving father.

J. B. was an outdoorsman who enjoyed the farm life. He spent many years tending to his garden and animals. He loved to spend his summers picking peas and feeding the hogs and goats. He could also build and fix anything. He was instrumental in guiding the lives of young men over the years who volunteered their time to help with his many projects.

J. B. could capture the attention of people with his words upon first meeting them. He had the biggest smile and was friendly to everyone he met. J.B. would often give lengthy speeches about life and offer words of wisdom to those who had time to hear it. His conversations would always include the goodness of the Lord. He wanted everyone to experience the joy of the Lord that he had.

J.B.'s life was nurturing, determined, and self-willed. He stood strong in what he believed in. He grew in the knowledge of holiness (Hebrews 12:14). J.B. was filled with the Holy Ghost (Acts 2:1-4) under the leadership of the late James Rodgers. At the time of his departure, J.B. was a faithful member of Holy Ghost Temple in Columbus, MS. His favorite songs were "I Surrender All" and "I Decided to Follow Jesus".

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife of fifty years Clara Ussery Petty; children, Laura Ann Collins (Bobby), Linda Harris, Jerry Terrell Petty (Linda), Jada Goulde (Willie), Kay Francis Gipson (Kenny), Paula James, and Carlos James. Two children preceded him in death, Rose Marie Petty and J.C. Petty. He leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; grandson, Jamarr Gray preceded him in death. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews.
