John G.
"City" Bell
July 11, 1963 – January 22, 2026
John G. Bell, affectionately known to family and friends as "City," was born July 11, 1963, in Columbus, Mississippi, to Lila and Joe Stewart, Jr. A devoted family man, U.S. Army veteran and a steady presence in his community, John lived a life defined by dedication, quiet strength, and simple pleasures.
John was raised in Columbus, where he grew up surrounded by family and the close-knit rhythms of his hometown. He answered his country's call by serving in the U.S. Army. His time in uniform shaped him — instilling discipline, a strong work ethic, and a deep sense of responsibility that he carried through the rest of his life.
After his military service, John applied that same dedication to his civilian work. He served as a maintenance worker for Mississippi University for Women and for the Columbus Housing Authority. In those roles he was known as a reliable, hard-working hand who took pride in keeping things running and helping others. Colleagues and neighbors remember him as someone who would quietly do what needed to be done, whether it was fixing a problem or offering practical advice.
John enjoyed the things that brought family and friends together. He was an avid gun collector who took care and pride in his collection. He loved sports — especially football, where he rooted passionately for the Dallas Cowboys, and basketball. Game days were an important part of his life, offering him moments of camaraderie, friendly rivalry and shared joy with those close to him.
Those who knew John remember him for his warm presence, his steady loyalty, and his willingness to lend a hand. He had a calm, dependable way about him: a steady voice in hard times, a ready laugh, and a practical outlook. He cared deeply for his children and extended family, and his love for them was central to who he was.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Lynda Nash; his parents, Lila and Joe Stewart, Jr.; and siblings Jessie "Arthur" Williams and Joe Stewart, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his children, Toran Bell of Columbus, MS, Andrea Nash of Louisville, MS, Miranda Nash of Southaven, MS, Jasmine Nash of Louisville, MS, Kobe Bell of Austin, TX, and Precious Craddieth of Columbus, MS. He is also survived by his siblings, Della Martin (New York City, NY); Frank (Margo) Stewart (Gary, IN), Shirley Verdell (Columbus, MS), Ethel Stewart (Las Vegas, NV), Geraldine Allen (Columbus, MS), Gloria (Michael) Hunter (Columbus, MS), Larry (Mary) Stewart (Jackson, MS), Dennis (Brenda) Stewart (Columbus, MS) and Rickey (Lisa) Stewart (Columbus, MS); 7 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will treasure his memory.
