Joseph Harris, Jr. departed this world May 5, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on March 21,1944, in Columbus, Mississippi, Joseph's life was a testament to adventure, kindness, and dedication.
Joseph's spirit for adventure knew no bounds, and he approached life with an open heart, never meeting a stranger. After graduating from R.E. Hunt High School in 1964, he embarked on a journey of service, honorably serving in the U.S. Navy for four years. Following his military service, Joseph pursued his lifelong dream of a career in electrical engineering, relocating to Oakland, California, where he honed his skills. However, his roots called him back to Columbus, where he dedicated himself to caring for his family.
A master of his craft, Joseph's expertise in electrical engineering was unparalleled. He founded Harris Electric Company in the early1980s, leaving an indelible mark on numerous projects, including Columbus Air Force Base, Weyerhaeuser, the Natchitoches National Fish Hatchery, Nissan Plant, and the Vicksburg MRC Building.
Joseph's legacy is one of love and devotion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph "Oudie" Harris, Sr. and Eva Howard Harris, his daughter Jessica Harris-Merrida, and siblings Richard, Clarence, Herman, and Doris Harris. He is survived by his son,Joseph "Trey" Harris, III (Larrissa), daughter, Leah "Buffy" Harris, John Wrench (Tasha),brother Jerry Harris, sister Sally Harris Johnson, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
Joseph's departure leaves a void in the hearts ,of all who knew him, but his memory will forever be cherished and his spirit will live on in the lives he touched. May Joseph Harris, Jr. rest in peace, his legacy shining brightly in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
