Obituary

June Carolyn Keaton, a woman of spirited independence, unwavering devotion, and remarkable resilience, peacefully departed this life on February 15, 2026, at Capital Caring Hospice at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. Her journey began on August 19, 1946, in the charming town of Hamilton, MS, born to the late Oscar Lee Smith and Mary A. Danner. It was in the Hamilton area that June spent her formative years, attending local schools and cultivating the early friendships and family ties that shaped her character. She confessed Christ at Bethlehem M.B. Church in Caledonia, MS, a faith that served as a guiding light throughout her years.

In 1963, June embarked on a significant personal chapter, entering into marriage with the late Lander Keaton, in this union three children were born Marvin Keaton, Leonard Keaton and their loving daughter Carolyn Keaton, all of whom are the pride and joy of her life. This is where June decided to become the best devoted mother as long as she lives.

She was preceded in death by her all of whom were the pride and joy of her life.loving parents, Mary A. Danner and Oscar Lee Smith, whose memories she carried close to her heart, and her dear brothers, Ollie Danner and Lucian Nathaniel Smith(Brenda). We imagine their joyous reunion as she transitioned to her eternal rest. June is further survived by her loving older brother Oscar Smith(Tammy) who shared a lifetime of memories and dear sweet sister, Rosie Diggs, and her special niece, Natalie Johnson(Ken).

A pivotal moment in her life occurred in 1975 when she made the courageous decision to relocate to the bustling Washington D.C. area. This move marked the beginning of a vibrant new life, and the nation's capital quickly became the cherished place she called home. It was here that June built a distinguished career and integrated herself deeply into the community. For an impressive 30 years, she dedicated her professional talents to WMATA, rising to the esteemed position of station manager. Her tenure was marked by dedication, efficiency, and a commitment to public service, ensuring the smooth operation of vital transit services. June's professional pride was further reflected in her active membership with the Amalgamated Transit Union Local #689, where she undoubtedly championed the rights and well-being of her fellow workers.

Beyond her professional achievements, June was a woman who embraced life with zest and an open heart. She found immense pleasure and expressed her joyful spirit through dancing, an activity that brought a sparkle to her eyes. Her love for community was evident in her enjoyment of lively fish fry gatherings, where laughter and fellowship abounded. Above all, June cherished the profound and unbreakable bonds she shared with her children, finding her greatest happiness in their love and companionship. Her affections also extended warmly to her beloved canine companions, whom she affectionately referred to as her "furry babies (Lion, Kennedi, Drew, and Oreo)" providing her with boundless comfort and unconditional affection. June's spiritual foundation was laid early in life when she June's vibrant personality, strength of character, and loving nature will be profoundly missed by all who had the honor of knowing her..

Her cherished "furry babies," Drew and Oreo, will also feel her absence deeply, who held a special place in her heart; and her beloved God-children, Danielle Parker, Felisa Carrington, Tracy Graves, and Candice Graves, whose lives she touched with her guidance and affection. A host of other relatives and innumerable friends, whose lives were enriched by her presence, will forever hold her memory in their hearts.
