Mary Ann
Young
Oct 27, 1944 — Mar 22, 2026
Columbus
Mary Ann Young peacefully departed this life in her sleep on March 22, 2026, at her residence. She was born on October 6, 1944, in Columbus, Mississippi, to the late Johnnie and Clara Sykes.
Her life was a testament to purpose, love, and unwavering faith.
At the age of 19, Mary Ann began a new chapter, moving from Columbus, Mississippi, to California after marrying Sam Cockrell. She later found lasting love with Raymond L. Young, whom she married in 1966. Their devoted union endured until his passing in 1994.
Mary Ann was a dedicated and hardworking professional. She faithfully served at Arrowhead Water for 30 years and later worked with Holistic Health Services alongside Dr. Nathan Rabb and staff. She had a deep passion for natural medicine, healing, and educating others—something she shared generously with everyone she encountered. She also spent ten years as a daycare worker, where her nurturing spirit and love for children shined brightly.
A woman of profound faith, Mary Ann loved the Lord wholeheartedly and remained active in her spiritual community. While in California, she was a cherished member of West Angeles Church of God in Christ under Bishop Charles Blake, and later a dedicated member of Bible Enrichment Fellowship International Church under Pastor Bam Crawford.
Mary Ann was known for her vibrant spirit, her love of music and beauty, and her commitment to her community. She had a joyful presence, a wonderful sense of humor, and was truly the life of the party—bringing laughter and light wherever she went.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie and Clara Sykes; her husband, Raymond L. Young; her son, Darryl Cockrell; and her siblings, Jimmy Sykes, Lou Sykes, and Emma Sykes-Hughes.
Mary Ann’s legacy of love lives on through her children, Courtney Cockrell and Stephanie Young both of Los Angeles, California, and Clara Joslyn Pascascio of Long Beach, California. She is also survived by her siblings, Johnnie Sykes, Willie Sykes, Annie Sykes-Bailey, Roger Sykes, Mattie Sykes, and Charlie Sykes; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Mary Ann Young will be deeply missed, but her spirit, her love, and the lives she touched will continue to inspire all who knew her.
