Obituary

Melvin Smith was born on April 1, 1960, in Columbus, Mississippi, the son of Annie Mae Smith. From the beginning of his life, Melvin developed into a caring and compassionate man who treasured his family, his faith, his church, and his community. He was a loving son, devoted brother, cherished uncle, loyal friend, and a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Melvin received his education in the Columbus school system and was a proud graduate of Caldwell High School, "Class of 1978." During his school years, he enjoyed playing football and, as a child, developed a love for Boy Scouting and karate. After graduating from Caldwell High School, Melvin continued his education and training by attending Job Corps for two years, preparing himself for a life marked by hard work and dedication.

Melvin possessed a strong work ethic and believed in giving his best wherever he was employed. For approximately 30 years, he worked at Beneke, while also working part-time at JCPenney. He later worked for the City of Columbus for several years before continuing his service with Lowndes County as a crew member. Throughout his working years, Melvin was known as a dependable and hardworking man who took pride in a job well done.

At an early age, Melvin confessed his hope in Christ and united with Tenth Street Fairlawn Missionary Baptist Church, where he remained a faithful lifelong member. His church held a special place in his heart, and he was actively involved in its ministry and service. Melvin faithfully served on the Trustee Board, offering his time, support, and talents wherever they were needed. His Christian faith was not only something he professed but something he demonstrated through his willingness to serve others.

Melvin also had a genuine love for his community. He willingly volunteered his time in many areas and found fulfillment in helping others. Whether through his church, his work, or his community involvement, Melvin believed in being present and lending a helping hand whenever possible.

In his leisure time, Melvin enjoyed the simple things that brought him happiness. He was an enthusiastic Pittsburgh Steelers fan and enjoyed cheering for his favorite team. He also loved listening to gospel music and spending time watching his favorite television shows. These moments, along with time spent with family and friends, brought great joy to his life.

On September 21, 2026, Melvin peacefully departed this earthly life at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. Although his earthly journey has ended, the love he shared, the service he rendered, and the memories he created will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Willie and Nellie Smith; aunts, Sally Mae Shirley, Marie Chandler and Jennie Robson; and uncle, Joe Fenton.

Melvin Smith leaves to cherish his precious memory: his mother, Annie Mae Smith; brothers, Jeffery Smith, Marcell Smith, all of Columbus, Mississippi and Anthony Smith of Jackson, Mississippi; uncle, J.D. (Ruth) Smith of Chicago, Illinois; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family, community members, and dear friends.

Melvin's life was one of faith, family, hard work, service, and love. Though his presence will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue through the lives he touched, and the memories shared by those who loved him.
