Obituary

Mesheka Stowers-Hughes, affectionately known to all as “Meme,” peacefully departed this life on Monday morning, August 31, 2026, at 3:30 a.m. at TriStar Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by the love and presence of her immediate family at her bedside.

Mesheka was born on December 4, 1978, in Macon, Mississippi, in Noxubee County, to the late Ada Lee Stowers and Elijah Chandler. At an early age, she confessed her faith in Jesus Christ and became a dedicated member of Friendship CME Church in Macon, Mississippi. Mesheka was a proud graduate of Noxubee County High School, Class of 1997. She possessed a vibrant personality, a strong work ethic, and an undeniable zest for life. She found great joy in working hard, keeping a spotless and beautiful home, and shopping, which was one of her absolute favorite pastimes.

Above everything else, Mesheka loved her family fiercely. Family was at the center of her heart, and no amount of distance could ever change that. Although she relocated to Tennessee, Mississippi was always home. Whenever she returned, she made it a priority to spend time with her siblings, extended family, in-laws, and friends. Some of her most treasured moments were those spent laughing, talking, and simply enjoying life with her sisters, brother, nieces, and nephews. Mesheka had a special way of bringing joy wherever she went. Those blessed to know “Meme” will especially remember her unique and unforgettable laugh, a laugh that could instantly light up a room and bring a smile to everyone around her. Her presence was special, her love was genuine, and her laughter was contagious. The memories she created will remain forever engraved upon the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Mesheka was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ada Lee Stowers and Elijah Chandler, and her brother, Nathaniel “Toby” Hopkins, who passed away on March 24, 2026.

She leaves to cherish her beautiful memory and continue her legacy of love her devoted husband, Sedrick Hughes of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; her devoted and one-and-only daughter, Ashanti Hughes of Goodlettsville, Tennessee; five loving sisters, Lynell (Everett) Clemons of East St. Louis, Illinois, Clarice (Tommie) Holmes, Sr. of Brooksville, Mississippi, Mable Hopkins (Earlie Henley) of Brooksville, Mississippi, Lillian (Julius) Gillespie of Macon, Mississippi, and Octavia Stowers (Leonard Fields) of Macon, Mississippi; one loving brother, Stanley Hopkins (Lisa Bradford) of Macon, Mississippi; and her supportive in-laws, Adrian and Jeanette Hughes of Macon, Mississippi. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and deeply treasured friends, each of whom carries special memories of the woman they lovingly called “Meme.”
