Obituary

Rev. Micheal A. Tate, a devoted servant of God, a proud Marine, and a beloved patriarch, entered eternal rest, leaving behind a profound legacy of faith, service, and an enduring spirit that touched countless lives. Born on June 9, 1969, in the vibrant city of Chicago, IL, Micheal was a cherished son to the late James Lee, Jr. and Mattie Pearl Tate. Throughout his life, he exemplified the roles of a devoted husband, loving father, a doting grandfather, a supportive son, a steadfast brother, a cherished uncle, and a loyal friend, leaving an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew him.

Micheal's foundational years were marked by a commitment to education, culminating in his graduation from Jackson Olan High School in 1986. With a spirit of patriotism and a dedication to duty, he answered the call to serve his nation, proudly enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. From July 1, 1987, to June 30, 1991, he served with honor and distinction, embodying the Marine Corps values that would subtly shape his discipline, leadership, and resilience throughout his life.

Following his honorable discharge from military service, Micheal embarked on a new chapter, initially relocating to Georgia before making his home in Columbus, MS. It was there that his journey of faith truly blossomed and his professional career flourished.

Micheal's spiritual path was deeply personal and profoundly impactful. Before accepting his ultimate calling into the ministry, he dedicated himself as a faithful Sunday school teacher and deacon under the guidance of Pastor Hugh C. Dent, laying the groundwork for his future spiritual leadership. In 2002, he fully embraced God's call, embarking on a remarkable journey as a spiritual shepherd. For 19 inspiring years, he served as the devoted pastor of Second James Creek, guiding his congregation with wisdom, compassion, and unwavering faith. His sermons resonated with hope, his counsel provided comfort, and his presence fostered a sense of community and belonging. His commitment to interfaith collaboration was also evident through his active participation in the First James Creek Minister's Alliance, where he contributed to the broader spiritual well-being of the region.

Beyond the pulpit, Rev. Tate was known as an exceptionally hard-working man with a keen intellect for business and a commitment to public service. He held prominent positions in the financial sector, serving with distinction as a branch manager for Mercury Finance, Tower Loan, First Franklin, and First Heritage Credit. In each role, he demonstrated leadership, integrity, and dedication to his clients. His civic engagement extended to his impactful tenure on the Columbus Light & Water Board, where he contributed to essential community services with thoughtful consideration and foresight.

Micheal was a man of genuine warmth, infectious spirit, and unwavering passions. An avid sports fan, his loyalty to the Alabama Crimson Tide was legendary, and he reveled in every game, celebrating victories with heartfelt enthusiasm. More than his accomplishments or his passions, Micheal was treasured for his authentic character. He possessed a remarkable ability to connect with people, and many found solace, wisdom, and laughter in his company. He was a person whom many loved to talk to and simply be around, drawn by his approachable demeanor and kind heart.

Rev. Tate was preceded in death by those he held dear: his loving parents, James Lee, Jr. and Mattie Pearl Tate; his cherished son, Joshua Sparks; and his dear brother, Claub Tate. While their absence was deeply felt, their memories remained a guiding light in his life.

He leaves to cherish his memories and continue his enduring legacy, his devoted wife, Sally Tate; his beloved children, Christopher Armstrong and Kenya Harvey both of Atlanta, GA, Termicheal Tate of Brooksville, MS and Micheal Alex Tate and Jana Tate both of Columbus, MS. His life's joy was further multiplied through his adored grandchildren, Tristin Tate, Kaleb Swann, Mikah Tate, and Hannah Green, who will carry his spirit forward. He is also survived by his loving siblings, Kelvin (Heather) Tate of Crawford, MS, Mary Alice Tate of Columbus, MS, and Kirby Tate of Birmingham, AL. His special aunt, Marie Tate; God-mother, the honorable Judge Peggy Phillips; God-dad, James T. Butler; special sisters, Velma Johnson, Avee James, Sally “2Momma” Dent; best friend, Christy Skipper; along with a host of other relatives and innumerable friends, will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
