Rita Jean Topps, a beacon of love and a cherished matriarch, peacefully transitioned to eternal rest on June 26, 2026, at Starkville Manor in Starkville, Mississippi. Born on November 3, 1956, in Columbus, Mississippi, to the late Castella and Willie James Topps, Rita's life was a testament to unwavering devotion and heartfelt connection. Her passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her, yet her spirit will forever resonate in the memories she created.

From her early beginnings in Columbus, Rita moved with her parents to Chicago, where she embraced her formative years. She attended Harrison schools, graduating with the class of 1974. A few years later, in 1978, she and her family returned to their roots in Mississippi. It was upon her return that Rita confessed her love for Christ, joining the New Baptist Temple M.B. Church, where she remained a faithful and active member until her health declined.

For two decades, Rita dedicated her talents to Columbus Marble Works, serving diligently as an inspector. Beyond her professional life, Rita found immense joy in her personal passions. She possessed a remarkable talent for sewing, a peaceful solace in fishing, and an unwavering enthusiasm for supporting her beloved grandchildren in their sporting endeavors. Above all, she cherished moments spent in the warm embrace of her family, for whom her love knew no bounds.

Rita was preceded in death by her devoted parents, Castella and Willie James Topps, and her beloved son, Detrick Topps, whose memory she held dear; and a bonus grandson, Byron Petty.

She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will be forever held by her two sons, Kameron (Shavonne) Topps and Reyshaun Topps, both of Columbus, Mississippi; Her loving siblings, Willie D. Fields of Columbus, Mississippi; James (Yolanda) Topps of Chicago, Illinois; and Michelle Topps, Felicia Topps, and Tracy (Kisa) Topps, all of Columbus, Mississippi; two bonus daughters, DeAnndra (Erion) Lanier and Lashundra Fields; two bonus sons, Raymond (Booney) Walters, Jr. and Royquez Lowe. Her memory will also be treasured by her four adoring grandchildren: Ayuna, Ky’Asia, Kayden, Ketric; and four bonus grandchildren: Ke’Asha, Shakiya, Jamien, and Alayshia; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends whose lives she touched with her kindness and generosity.
