Ruth Sykes, a lifelong resident of Columbus, Mississippi, passed away at the age of 90. Born on April 29, 1936, in Columbus, Ruth was the daughter of the late Sam Colvin and Mary Colvin Coleman.
Ruth was born and raised in Columbus, MS. She spent her entire life in the Columbus community, where she became known for her strong faith, warm heart, and love for her family and friends.
Throughout her working life, Ruth was dedicated to her career as an assembly line operator in the manufacturing industry. She spent approximately 25 years working, including with United Technologies, before retiring. Ruth was also employed with St. Mary Catholic School.
Ruth was a woman of faith. She began her church journey at Canaan M.B. Church and later became a member of Stephen Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she remained connected to her faith and community.
Outside of work and church, Ruth enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. She especially loved fishing, bowling, and gardening. Her hobbies reflected her joyful spirit and her appreciation for spending time with the people and things she loved. Throughout the years, she also developed a passion for sewing.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Sam Colvin and Mary Coleman Colvin, as well as siblings R. Mae Fulgham, James Colvin, Otis Colvin, and Emma McElroy. She was also preceded in death by her children Terri Sykes Taylor, Casey Sykes, Ronnie Colvin, and Dethaniel Sykes, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her children Kirt Sykes (Ossie), Alvin Sykes and David C. Sykes, along with her surviving siblings, Almateen Peoples, Henrietta Sykes and Sam Colvin; 11 grandchildren; 8 great- grandchildren. She also leaves behind extended family members, friends; and loved ones whose lives were touched by her presence.
Ruth will be remembered for her strength, faith, perseverance, and devotion to her family. Though she is no longer with us, the memories she created and the love she shared will continue to live on through the generations she leaves behind.
