Obituary

Sophia M. Walker-Horne, the great-granddaughter of a former slave, the first of three children of Luvert "Gennie" Walker and Isabella "Bella" Walker, and a lifetime productive member of Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church, was born November 21, 1943.

Sophia, a product of a small rural, segregated unincorporated Community, near the eastern border of the state of Mississippi, called Mashualville.  She excelled to a status of which we now describe as "a community care giver". This was her mission and passion.  As a community care giver, she often provided transportation to needed residents of the Community to doctors, pharmacies and supermarkets.

As a well respected chef and a popular baker, she proudly provided cakes and pies to friends and family members. Her Vegetable garden was her way of enjoying the experiences of her talent and hobby.

As a lifetime member of Mt. Moriah UM Church, she served as the church financial secretary, Sunday school superintendent and many other assignments as needed.  She dedicated over sixty years of her adult life to the service of her church.

Her childhood education began with classes in Mt. Moriah church in 1949.  Church schools were community based and often one teacher taught multiple classes in one room.  As her early education advanced to the next level, she was among the first group of children of African descent to be bused to a consolidated elementary school in Macon, the county seat.  There, she finished elementary and high school in 1963.  After graduation, she relocated to Chicago, Illinois for about five years, and returned to Mashulaville to be a care giver to her aging parents.

Sophia met and married Dolphus Horne in the late 1970's and both were contributing members of Mt. Moriah UM Church.

Sophia was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday evening, of February 15, 2025.  She is predeceased by her Father, Luvert Walker Sr, Mother, Isabella Walker, Husband, Dolphus Horne, Brother, Edward Walker and Son, Dolphia Horne.

She leaves to cherish her legacy; Sons, Anthony L. "Tony" Lindsey and Kenneth E. Lindsey. Step-daughters: Vanessa Simonds and JoAnn Nichols.  Grand Children: Tony Mays, Morgan Horne.  Brother: Luvert (Linda) Walker II, Neices: LaToya Walker, LisCha (Ali) Walker Tolbert, LaShea Walker.  Special Cousins: Rosie Higgins, Jeannia Walker-Ward, Everlyn Cline, Ruthie Adams, and a host of other cousins and friends,

To summarize Sophia's legacy: "May the life I live speak for me".
