Obituary

William DeForrest Smith was born on August 14, 1970, in Columbus, Mississippi, to the late Charlie Lee Smith, Sr. and Gwendolyn Joyce Wallace Smith. He confessed Christ at an early age at St. Paul M.B. Church in Columbus, Mississippi and in his later adult years, became a member of Zion Gate M.B. Church in Columbus, Mississippi.

He is a 1988 graduate of Motley High School in Columbus, MS. He was “Big D” to some and “Fig” to others. His smile was contagious! He met no strangers. He loved people and had the heart of a servant. He spent time with the old, young and in between.

Prior to becoming an independent Contractor/Self-employed, he worked close to 20 years at Hydro Vac in Columbus, MS.

William, but referred to as DeForrest by family, was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Lee Smith, Sr. and brother, Charlie Lee Smith, Jr., and maternal and paternal grandparents.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Renee Michelle Moody Smith; his mother, Gwendolyn (Frank) Walker and step-mother, Annie Ruth Smith of Columbus, MS; children, Roderick (Avisha) Smith, DeAndre Smith, Jordan Smith of Columbus, MS, Jaylon Smith of Killeen, TX, and Korsheunta Green of Houston, TX; step-children, Timothy Thomas of Orlando, FL; La’Porsha (Rasheen) McCarter and Madison Moody of Columbus, MS; eighteen (18) grandchildren; sisters: Ruth Smith-Wood of Mt. Vernon, IL; Minnie Smith Crenshaw of Indianapolis, IN; Kimberly Sanders of Olive Branch, MS and DuJuania Deloatch of Schertz, TX; brothers, Joseph (Linda) Smith and Randy Hill of Columbus, MS; a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews; like a sister, Carolyn (Adolphus) Brewer and Rebecca “Prissy” Smith, and close friends that goes as far back as head start.
