Willie "Sonny"
Edward Spann, Sr.
August 16, 1948 – January 5, 2026
Willie Edward "Sonny" Spann, 77, entered this life on August 16, 1948, in Mashulaville, Mississippi, born to the late George and Juanita Spann Goodwin. He attended school in Macon, Mississippi, where he completed his high school education. After school, Willie began working at a local antique shop, where he perfected his craft in upholstery. His skill and dedication led him to become an entrepreneur; he later owned and operated his own upholstery and carpentry business, building both furniture and a life rooted in hard work and pride in a job well done.
Willie confessed Christ at an early age at Woodlawn CME Church, and in later years he was a faithful member of Cedar Grove M.B. Church. He met the love of his life, Jean Marie Spann, and together they shared more than 50 years of marriage and companionship. Family was everything to Willie—he delighted in spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved hunting and fishing, watching western shows, cooking, and one family favorite: entertaining everyone with his beloved "hambone dance."
He departed this life on January 5, 2026, in Columbus, Mississippi. Willie was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jean Marie Brownridge Spann; his daughter, Dianna Franklin; his grandson, Tymechi Spann; his brother, Jessie Will Spann; and his son-in-law, Selvain McQueen.
Willie's memories will be forever cherished by his children: Willie Spann, Jr. of Nashville, TN, Mona Malisa Spann of Macon, MS, Tiffany Spann of Macon, MS and Tashika McQueen of New Hope, MS; his grandchildren, Eddie, Takia, Precious, Takarria, Star, Jaydon, Xavier, Ethan, Selvain III, and Bella; his great-grandchildren, Tyler, Tyson, Karson, Maliyah, and Amir; his sister, Betty Tippett of Macon, MS; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who loved him.
