Beloved Matriarch and Servant
-Annie Bertha (Ellis) Black-
Annie Bertha Ellis Black was born the fifth child to the late Jimmie Ellis and Queen Esther (Stewart) Ellis on June 13, 1941 in Aliceville, Alabama (Pickens County). She transitioned to her heavenly home "beyond the sky" on February 2, 2025 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi.
Annie B. confessed Christ early in life. She joined Springhill M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor J.R. Robinson, but also attended other churches in the "Old Memphis" community. Later, she joined Oak Grove M.B. Church (Macon, Mississippi) in 1960 and served faithfully for fifty-five years as church secretary until 2015. On October 30, 2016, she joined Peter's Rock Temple Macon under the leadership of Elder Michael Jones. She remained faithful until death.
She attended Cluster School (Grades 1-4) in Dancy, Alabama; Mount Tabor School (Grades 5-6) in Panola, Alabama; and completed (Grades 7-12) and graduated from North Sumter High School in Panola, Alabama in 1960.
Annie B. met Lonzell Black in December 1959 at Springhill M.B. Church. They united in holy matrimony on July 15, 1960 in Dancy, Alabama. They were blessed with eight beautiful children. Annie B. began work at Scooba Manufacturing (The Glove Factory) in Shuqualak, Mississippi from 1973-1980. She began her professional career as a substitute bus driver in 1978 and continued until 1983. In 1983, she became a full-time bus driver for the Noxubee County School District. This tenure spanned over thirty-six consecutive years from 1983-2019. She concluded her professional career as a bus driver with a combined total of forty-one years of service to the pupils of the Noxubee County School District.
Annie B. was preceded in death by her parents, Jimmie and Queen Esther Ellis; five brothers; Henry, Robert, Elbert, Willie, and Jimmie Ellis; two sisters; Sarah Johnson and Sallie Jones; and two daughters; Sandra Gail Black and Carolyn Black Johnson.
Her life memories and legacy will be cherished by her husband, Lonzell Black, Sr.; five sons; Oliver W. Black, Sr. (Shelia), of Macon, MS; Lonzell Black, Jr. (Mary) of Macon, MS; Romell Black (Pamela) of Shuqualak, MS; Matthew Black, Sr. (Katina) of Macon, MS and Detrick M. Black of Macon, MS; one daughter, Tiny R. Goodwin (Albert) of Macon, MS; son-in-law, Charles F. Johnson, Sr. of West Point, MS; brothers, Emmitt Ellis and Earnest Ellis both of Columbus, MS; seventeen grandchildren; thirty-nine great-grandchildren; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
