Douglas "Duck" Cockrell, Sr. was born on May 5, 1939 to the late Thomas Lee Cockrell, Sr. and Bessie Chandler Cockrell in Macon, Mississippi.
Duck confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Carmel M.B. Church in Macon, MS. As a youth, he was an avid baseball player and became a skilled hunter and fisherman. He moved to Columbus, MS 50+ years ago and worked at Johnson Furniture Company until his retirement. To know him was an honor as Duck didn't meet a stranger. He was well known for his honesty, witty humor and jokes, and lover of his family.
Duck peacefully transitioned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at his residence with family by his bedside.
Duck was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters: Lucille Chandler, Hattie Williams, and Martha Ann Fenster; two brothers: Joe Eddie Cockrell and Thomas Lee Cockrell, Jr.; son: Robert Earl Cockrell, and granddaughter: Shantela Abner.
Duck leaves to cherish his memories and legacy to the love of his life for 51 years: Mary Dell Cockrell of Columbus, MS; five children: Murtis (James) Davis of Macon, MS, Debbie Abner of Memphis, TN, Valencia (Charlie) Neal and Douglas (Adrienne) Cockrell, Jr. of Columbus, MS, and Dr. Phillip Cockrell of Hyattsville, MD; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren; three sisters: Lillie Mae Brooks of St. Louis, MO, Mable Mosley of Columbus, MS, and Annie Turner of Mobile, AL; six sisters-in-law: Everlena Cockrell of St. Louis, MO, Lillie Boykin of Olympia Fields, Nancy (Glenn) Richardson of West Point, MS, Bridget Van Holland-Williams of Katy, TX, Juanita Williams of Brooksville, MS, and Barbara Williams of Columbus, MS, two brothers-in-law: Frank Williams of Shuqualak, MS and Ollie Williams of Columbus, MS; and a host of special nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends.
