Obituary

Eloise Petty Payne was born June 19, 1932 to the late Clarence Lee Petty and Rosetta Morton
Petty. She was educated in the public schools of Pickens County, Pine Grove School,
Mamieville Jr. High School, and Pickens County Training School.

Eloise confessed faith in Christ at an early age, baptized, and became a member of Baptist
Grove M.B. Church in Ethelsville, AL. She served in many capacities including Sunday School
Teacher, Usher Board, and Missionary Society. She later united with Elbethel M.B. Church
where she continued to serve as an usher until her health failed. Eloise was a member of the

Lulah Chapter #52 Order of The Eastern Star.

Eloise met and married the love of her life, James Payne, and to this union five children were born: Verdella, Leon, Douglas, Jennifer, and Joseph.

Eloise was the second of ten children. She loved her family with all heart, planning family
reunions each year. Her hobbies were gardening, sewing, making clothes, quilting, crocheting,
and canning. Eloise was employed for many years as a fabric maker with Seminole
Manufacturing of Columbus, MS until retirement. She enjoyed volunteering at the nursing

home/rehab facility in Reform AL.

Eloise departed this life on July 21, 2024, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She
is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, James Payne; her daughter, Jennifer R.
Payne; her sons: Douglas Payne, and Leon Payne; her sisters: Lucy T. Wright and Virgie Jones;
her grandson, Albert Shawn Harris; and her brothers: Loverly Lee Petty and Lewis Clayton
Petty.
Eloise leaves a legacy of love, caring, and guidance for all whom she touched. She loved the
Lord, always putting him first and sharing with others.
Treasuring precious memories of Eloise are: her daughter, Verdella(Albert)Harris of Ethelsville,
AL; her son, Joseph Payne of Atlanta, GA; her granddaughters: Rosetta Bryant,
April(Kwasi)Harris, Ashton Harris, and Dyani Payne; her grandsons: Jason Harris and Leon
Payne; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; her brothers: James, John, Clarence, Jr.,
and Joe Petty; her sister, Tina Perkins; four sisters-in law; and a host of nieces, cousins, and
friends.
