George Turner,
Sr.
July 20, 1933 – September 26, 2025
George Turner, Sr. was born on July 20, 1933, in Crawford, Mississippi, to the late Lucy Alma (McGee) Turner and Tom Turner. He was the tenth child in a blended family of thirteen. As a child, George—affectionately known as "Georgie Boy" by his siblings—was recognized for his caring nature, bright spirit, and big dreams.
In 1954, at the age of twenty-one, George married his childhood sweetheart, Maxie B. Samuels. Their union was blessed with eight children. A devoted husband and father, George was a hardworking man who believed in providing for his family. For over twelve years, he faithfully worked two full-time jobs before securing a long-term position with Baldor Electric (ABB), where he found his true professional fit.
Known for his attentive and nurturing personality, George laid a strong foundation as a role model for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He instilled in them a deep Christian faith, a strong sense of family, and the importance of keeping God first—often reminding them to "trust the Man upstairs."
From his early years, George found joy in singing with The Turner Brothers Quartet and spending Saturday mornings rabbit hunting with his brothers, a pastime he later shared with his son, George Jr. He also enjoyed dining at various restaurants, watching western movies, cleaning his fleet of vehicles, maintaining his lawn, and tending to his garden. Even as his health began to decline, George continued to visit the rabbit field with George Jr., finding joy in simply watching and listening to the dogs run, creating memories that will last forever.
George accepted Christ at an early age and united with St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Crawford, Mississippi, where he remained a faithful member until his passing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy and Tom Turner; his children, Willie George Turner, Sylvester (Stephanie) Turner, Earnestine Turner, and Leonard Bernard Turner; his son-in-law, Lonnie Morris; and his siblings, Katie Dell Foster, Robert (Melinda) Wilkins Sr., Tommy Turner, Willie Turner, Jerry Turner, Silas Turner, James Turner, Sam Turner, John Henry Turner, Mary Ella Turner, and T.C. (Emma) Turner.
He leaves to cherish his memories his longtime companion, Althea Shaw; his children, John (Eddie Mae) Shields, Marie Smith, George (Sarah) Turner Jr., Larrie (Ophelia) Turner, David (Annie Pearl) Turner, and Ethel Turner-Morris; one brother, Isaac Turner Sr.; twenty grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
George Turner, Sr. lived a life marked by faith, love, and hard work. His legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
