Miss Gloria Jean Johnson was better known as "Fruity," was born in Noxubee County on September 28, 1961, to Mary Shields and James Anderson.

She accepted Christ and joined Vibrant Church in 2021 where she was baptized.

She received her education in the Chicago, IL school system. She held down several jobs in Illinois in the laundry service and hospital field. She also worked at Aurora Australis Lodge Nursing Facility in the late 90's and in private home care in Steens, MS.

Gloria AKA Miss Fruity, to know her is to love her. She didn't have a no filter, what came up, came out. She was going to tell you just how she felt and what she thought. If you didn't like it, she didn't mine showing you that door. She loved her kids, grandchildren, and family, especially her long-time mate Calvin Swanigan.

On Thursday April 13, 2023, on the wings of an angel, Gloria peacefully went to God everlasting arms.

Gloria was preceded in death by mother, Mary Shields; her father, James Anderson; mother, Mary Shields; stepfather, Eddie W. Douglas; sister, Mary Frances Rogers.

She leaves to cherish her memories: two loving sons, John (Brittany) Fleming and Edet Fleming; her longtime mate, Calvin Swanigan; her three sisters, Mary J. Shields, Martha J. Douglas, and Lavita M. Douglas all of Columbus, MS; three brothers, John (Eddie Mae) Shields of Harvey, IL; Johnny Nick Stevenson, and Edet Douglas both of Chicago, IL. She also leaves behind her legacy in 6 grandchildren:  Ny'Kyra, Ja'Nya, John Jr., Edet Jr., Jaceion and Armani and 1 one great-grandchild, Ka'Ash; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
