Obituary

Rev. Gus Thomas, a beloved pastor, devoted family man, and skilled electrician, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, at Aurora Nursing & Rehab. He was born on February 8, 1939, in Columbus, Mississippi, to Carrie and Christopher Thomas, and was one of twelve cherished siblings.

From a young age, Gus demonstrated a deep faith and commitment to his community, confessing Christ at Trinity Mt. Carmel Methodist Church. His spiritual journey led him to answer the call to ministry in the 1970s, and for over 60 years, he dedicated his life to serving God and his congregation. Rev. Thomas pastored at Trinity Mt. Carmel, Concord Methodist, and several other churches, where he was known for his compassionate spirit, inspiring sermons, and unwavering support for his parishioners.

In addition to his pastoral work, Gus was a talented self-employed electrician, earning a reputation for his expertise in TV repair. His hands were not only skilled in the trade but also in nurturing relationships, as he often lent a helping hand to those in need, embodying the very essence of community service.

Rev. Thomas was a loving father, grandfather, and friend, whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and service that will continue to inspire those who knew him. His family and friends will remember him for his unwavering faith, his infectious laughter, and his ability to bring people together.

Gus is preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Terry E. Thomas and Cedric Thomas; nine siblings, J. D. Thomas, Walter C. Thomas, Rev. Carzell Thomas, Sr. Eddie Thomas, Sammie Thomas, Henry Lee Thomas, Mildred Cohen, Mary Poindexter and Jimmie Thomas.

Gus is survived by his loving family, who will honor his memories: his children, Lisa Thomas, Anita Thomas, Lori Williams, Gus Timothy Thomas, Eric (Mishunda) Thomas, Andy Thomas, Stephen (Melanie) Thomas and Courtney Thomas; his siblings, William Ben Thomas and Albert Thomas; and a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
