Jimmy Bonner, a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend was born on January 28, 1949, in Carrollton, Alabama, to Jimmie Lee and Alberta Bonner. Jimmy lived a life marked by service, dedication, and unwavering faith.
A man of deep faith, Jimmy accepted Christ as his personal savior at a young age and became a lifelong member of New Zion M.B. Church in Steens, Mississippi. His dedication to his church was evident in his service as a deacon, where he answered the call to serve his community with love and compassion. He was also a cherished member of the Mighty Trumpets of Joy Gospel Group, where he shared his musical talents, singing and playing the guitar, bringing joy to many.
Jimmy's journey began in his hometown, where he attended R.E. Hunt High School before answering the call to serve his country in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1990. As a military police officer and a proud Vietnam veteran, he exemplified courage and commitment, traits that would define his life long after his military service. During his time in the Army, he pursued further education at Troy State University, demonstrating his belief in lifelong learning.
Jimmy's love story began in December 1969 when he married the love of his life, Bennie Bonner. Together, they raised three sons, instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion. He was a sharp man who took pride in everything he did, from his impeccable clothing and clean vehicles to his unwavering commitment to serving his community.
In 1992, Jimmy joined the Columbus Municipal School District as a Peace Officer, a role he embraced with passion and integrity. He served the district until his retirement on June 30, 2017, achieving the rank of Chief of Police in his final year. His commitment to the safety and well-being of students was evident as he nurtured and mentored countless young lives, earning the affectionate titles of "Officer Bonner" and "OB." His legacy as a dedicated educator and protector will forever be remembered by those who walked the halls of Columbus High School.
In 2020, Jimmy continued his service to the community by joining the U.S. Marshall Service as a Lead Court Security Officer at the Senator Thad Cochran United States Bankruptcy Courthouse, where he continued to exemplify professionalism and dedication. Beyond his professional achievements, Jimmy was a devoted volunteer, coaching youth baseball and football with the Columbus City School District, where he inspired young athletes to strive for excellence both on and off the field.
On March 29, 2025 at Baptist Memorial Hospital – GT. Jimmy received his Heavenly reward for his earthly labors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jimmie Lee and Alberta Bonner; his brothers, Mr. Albert Davis, Mr. William L. McCottrell, Sr., Mr. Sammie L. Bonner, and Mr. Fred Bonner; one sister-in-law; one brother-in-law; his grandparents, Mr. Jim Henry (Abby) Bonner and Mr. Fred (Wilma) Davis; and a nephew, Mr. Albert Wayne Bonner.
He is survived by wife, Bennie Bonner of Columbus, MS; three sons, Shawn Bonner of Columbus, MS, Lafayette (Dawn) Bonner of Jacksonville, FL, and Lavont (Ashley) Bonner of Dallas, TX; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Mr. Booker T. (the late Annie Charles) Mc Cottrell of Temple, TX, Mr. Ellis D. Mc Cottrell of Columbus, GA; Mrs. Lula (the late William) McCottrell of Columbus, MS; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Mrs. Jean (Sam) Ford of San Antonio, TX, Mrs. Nancy (The late James) Eason of Massapequa, NY, Mrs. Bonnie (Kenny) Truitt of Gautier, MS and Mrs. Betty (Eric) Chinnis of Uniondale, NY; ten grandchildren. He also leaves to cherish his memories: nieces; nephews, a host of relatives, co-workers, students and friends.
