Larry Shirley, Sr. peacefully departed this life on February 1, 2026, at Diversicare in Eupora, MS. Born on August 17, 1955, in Columbus, MS, to the late Cleveland Smith and Floy Kate Shirley, Larry lived a life rich in faith, family, and the simple joys that brought him profound happiness.
Larry's spiritual journey was a cornerstone of his life. He confessed Christ early on and became a devoted member of Fifteenth Street Church of God in Christ. Later, he continued his faithful walk at Freedom Worship Center in Columbus, MS, where he found strength and community in his unwavering belief.
A true son of the soil, Larry possessed a deep love for farming. He spent countless hours tending to his beloved vegetables and caring for his cows, finding peace and fulfillment in the rhythm of nature. His hands-on approach to life extended to his passion for barbecuing, where he delighted in preparing delicious meals that brought loved ones together. These gatherings, often held outdoors with family and friends at the local flea market, were cherished moments of fellowship and laughter, reflecting his warm and hospitable spirit. Larry was also an avid and dedicated fan of Mississippi State Football, cheering on his Bulldogs with enthusiastic loyalty.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland Smith and Floy Kate Shirley, and his dear sister, Oranell Gray.
He leaves behind a legacy of precious memories, lovingly held by his devoted wife, Mary Shirley of Columbus, MS. His spirit lives on through his beloved children, Carmen Slaughter of Hampton, GA, Katrina Shirley of Columbus, MS, Larry Shirley, Jr. of Columbus, MS, Jacqueline Danner of Atlanta, GA, Jennifer Porter of Columbus, MS, Amy Davis of Columbus, MS, and Darryl Williams of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by his brother, Jimmy D. Shirley and his wife Sudjit of Steens, MS. Larry's joy was multiplied by his 17 cherished grandchildren and 4 adored great-grandchildren, who will forever carry forward his kindness and zest for life. He also leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends who were touched by his generous heart and genuine presence.
