Obituary

Mrs. Laverne Lavender Ellis, affectionately known as "Von", was born in Columbus, MS on January 17, 1961, to the late Orange Lee Walls and the late Frankie Lee Lavender. She peacefully entered eternal rest on December 20, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS.

Laverne confessed hope in Christ at an early age and joined Glenn Chapel C.M.E. Church, where she served on the Usher Board and the choir. Laverne had a beautiful voice and often used singing as a spiritual outlet.

Laverne attended Caldwell High School but later earned her G.E.D. She worked various jobs throughout her life, with her last place of employment being at Café Unique. Laverne was a passionate cook and found immense joy in preparing meals, hosting get togethers and fostering connections by bringing people together.

Laverne never met a stranger. She will always be known for her welcoming and accommodating spirit. Laverne was warm and hospitable and continuously welcomed people in her home, especially if they were in need. Laverne had a love for people and viewed her home as being a sanctuary for both family and friends.

Laverne was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Joseph Ellis, Sr. on October 4, 1991. To this union, two children were born: Joseph Ellis Jr and Jarvis Ellis. Joseph also embraced the role of being a devoted father to Quincy Lavender and Yanci Lavender until his death. Joseph departed this earth on November 28, 2008.

Laverne was preceded in death by both her mother and father, her husband, Joseph Ellis, her grandmother, Luvenia Lavender, and sisters, Frances Bradford, Roxanne Gandy and Wanda Lavender.

She leaves to cherish her memories: daughter Yanci Lavender of Columbus, MS; sons, Quincy (Danielle) Lavender, Joseph Ellis, and Jarvis Ellis all of Columbus, MS; brothers, Charlie Lavender, Willie Lavender, and Michael Gandy all of Columbus, MS; sisters, Kathaleen Richardson, Takeylh Patmon, Roxie (Bryant) Staples, Marilyn Tate, Kimberly Tate and Elizabeth Tate, all of Columbus, MS; close cousin/best friend, Jewelean (Frederick) Lowery; 12 grandchildren whom she loved dearly; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom will truly miss her loving, caring and witty spirit.
