Obituary

Melvin Salter, affectionately known to all as "Melt," departed this life on May 13, 2026 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-GT. He is leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Born on May 24, 1957 in Columbus, MS, Melvin was a beloved son to the late Henry Melvin and Deola Salter.

Melvin spent his life rooted in his hometown of Columbus, MS, where he attended Columbus City Schools. He dedicated his working years to Sanderson Plumbing before transitioning to Airline Manufacturing,

At an early age, Melvin accepted Christ, finding spiritual guidance and community at Fourth Street M.B. Church, where his faith journey began.

"Melt" was a man who truly embraced life's simple pleasures. He cherished moments spent hanging out with friends, sharing laughter and camaraderie. His passion for cooking brought joy to many, and he was an avid fan of football and wrestling, always ready to cheer on his favorite teams and athletes. He also found peace and wonder in riding and sightseeing. Melvin was preceded in death by his loving parents, Henry Melvin and Deola Salter; his sister, Rose Ann Scott; and a brother Jimmie Salter.

He leaves to cherish his precious memories, his son, Byron Lane of West Point, MS, and his adored grandchild, Jamiya Lane. He is also survived by his beloved sisters: Veola Salter-Gibbs and Ann Salter-White both of Columbus, MS; two cherished aunts: Onita Brown of Columbus, MS and Helen Capers of Brooklyn, NY; a special nephew, Keith Salter, who was his caregiver; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends whose lives he touched with his warmth and kindness.

Melvin "Melt" Salter will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories will forever remain in our hearts.
