Obituary

David Walter Colebrook III, age 78, of Columbus, Mississippi, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2023, at Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle. Born on February 4, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the first son of the late David Walter Colebrooke, Jr., and Iris Anderson Simmons. He spent his early years in the vibrant city until his family relocated to Miami, Florida, when he was just a toddler. Affectionately known as "Little David," he was raised in the Bunche Park community of Opa-locka, Florida, and graduated from North Dade Junior Senior High School in Opa Locka, Florida, in 1964.

After graduation, "Little David" enlisted in the United States Air Force on a buddy pass with his cousin Howard, bravely serving as a Vietnam War veteran. Following his military service, he had a distinguished civil service career, retiring from M1 Support, formerly known as Raytheon, where he served as a Senior Wheel and Tire Shop Specialist at Columbus Air Force Base.  In addition to his professional pursuits, David was a devoted family man and an esteemed official for over 40 years for the Mississippi High School Activities Association. His passion for officiating led to multiple "Referee of the Year" awards, a testament to his dedication and excellence on the field.

David was a man of deep faith, serving as a minister and member of All Nations Ministry under the auspices of Pastor James Verdell, Jr., for many years. In this spiritual community, he contributed to various capacities such as a Deacon, Trustee, and Men's Leader Committee. Known as "dad" to all, his impact extended beyond his immediate family.

David leaves to cherish his memory his beloved, wife of many loving years, Betty Ann Colebrook, and his children: Darwin (Nora) Colebrooke, Janice Tuggle, Roderick Colebrooke, Rodney Colebrooke, Cindy (Reginald) Henry, Trenton (Shalise) Matthews, Iris Colebrook, Chris Hicks, Danah Hayes, Jason (Kalesha) Colebrook, Lynn (Chantel) Colebrook, his sister, Nancy (Lawrence) Colebrooke LaFleur, and brother Kenneth "KC" Colebrooke, along with 24 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and loving relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his father, David Walter Colebrooke, Jr., his mother, Iris Anderson Simmons, his aunt Esterlene Colebrooke, and his brother, Keith Colebrooke.

David will be remembered for his strength, generosity, kindness, and the impact he made on the lives of those around him. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and the communities he served.  Most importantly he was and is a man of prayer.  His legacy will forever live on.
