Obituary

Raymond L. Griggs was born on July 24, 1948, to Mary A. Whitten and J.T. Perkins in Paulette, MS. He departed this life on June 2, 2022, in Brunswick, GA.

Mr. Griggs was a graduate of R.E. Hunt High School in Columbus, MS.  He graduated from Lewis Business College in Detroit, MI, and later attended East Mississippi Community College (Columbus Airforce Base campus). He was a veteran of the United States Army. During his military career, he served a tour in Germany and fought in the Vietnam War. He received a National Defense Service Medal for his service.

Raymond was a born-again believer in Christ Jesus. He was a long-standing member of St. Matthews M.B. Church for over 40 years. During this time, he was an active member. He served in the choir, as the caretaker of the church's cemetery, as youth director, and as a trustee. He also enjoyed attending Sunday School and studying God's WORD.

Mr. Griggs was the owner of The Strip Shop, where he restored and refinished furniture for over 30 years. He took pride in his work and did it to the best of his ability. Mr. Griggs was a master craftsman who once said, "I think I found my calling."

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary A. Whitten and J.T. Perkins; his grandmother, Ms. Minnie G. Dowson; his great- aunt, Ms. Matilda Conner; and his sister, Belinda Lowe.

Mr. Griggs leaves to cherish his memory his two daughters, Quintelle (Darrell) King of Plano, TX, and Quintrelle Griggs of Richardson, TX; ex-wife, Emma Griggs, of Columbus, MS; special friend, Jane B. Griggs, of Columbus, MS; siblings, Andrew (Mattye) Whitten of Columbus, MS, Late Belinda (Donald) Lowe of Caledonia, MS, Lillie Griggs of Columbus, MS, Mary Smith of Tallassee, AL, Earnestine (Thomas) Mobley of Columbus, MS; beloved aunt, Annette Griggs, of Columbus, MS; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, relatives, and friends.
