(R-15) John J. Harris
December 20, 1963 – September 7, 2025
Ret. MSGT (R-15) John J. Harris was born on December 20, 1963, to James Harris and Lonnie Lee Harris in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and friend.
John grew up in Vicksburg, MS attended Vicksburg High School, graduating in 1981. He furthered his education at Hinds Community College, where he earned his associate degree. In 1982, John enlisted in the United States Army, dedicating himself to a distinguished military career that spanned 24 years. He served with honor until his retirement in 2006, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8). During his military service, John joined the Mississippi Highway Patrol in 1989, where he rose to the rank of G-46 and later R-15. During his tenure, he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant serving in patrol and supervisor of the local Mississippi Department of Motor Vehicle until his retirement in 2021. John's love for people was immense not only in uniform, but in everyday life as a civilian. His smile and conversation left an impact on all whom had the pleasure of crossing his path.
John was also a passionate outdoorsman who loved to fish. He also loved to wash cars, and spend quality time playing outside with his grandson. He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Mississippi State Bulldogs, sharing his enthusiasm for sports with family and friends.
John J. Harris passed away on September 7, 2025, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, Mississippi. He is preceded in death by his father, James Harris and his grandmother, Elsie Brown-Davis.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, and cherished memories to: his wife, Kimyata Harris of Columbus, MS; his children, John J. (Tyra) Harris, Jr. and Laquanda (Joshua) Gates both of Tupelo, MS; his grandson, Tylen Gates; mother, Lonnie Lee Harris of Springfield, IL; his sister, Stephaine (Gerald) Harris of Springfield, IL; his brothers, James (Jackie) Harris of Greenville, MS and Homer Harris of Springfield, MS; his sisters-in-law, Lakevia (Barry) Smith and Jamia Washington both of Macon, MS; and his brother-in law, Jermaine (Coketha) Washington of Macon, MS; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
John also leaves behind a legacy of service and love to his colleagues and community.
